With her series “Entangled” Polish artist Agata Hamilton presents large scale black and white anastatic screenprints which she combines with an accompanying sound. Though each work functions on its own, combined they create a triptych that presents itself almost like a composite puzzle. With depictions of aging female bodies, the works, each consisting of three parts, confront the viewer with ideals dominating Western society regarding body-image and aging.

Standing over two meters tall, each three-part work depicts a larger than life-sized middle-aged, nude woman with a natural voluptuous body. Dark lines swirl across the picture plane and create the illusion of the women being entangled. As a result the sense of entanglement is shifted towards the themes present in the work, making clear the complex and sometimes contradictory feelings regarding self-image in modern society. The lack of colour further emphasises the focus on the motifs they present.

With their large formats the works present themselves as statements of resistance while still displaying a vulnerability. This ambiguity is also evident in how the woman both seems to shy away from the viewer while also presenting her body for further inspection. The interplay of ambivalent forms of expressions give rise to further explore the different sentiments present in every part of Hamilton’s works.
