Agata Kycia (PL)
Text written by GHA
Agata Kycia’s abstract linocut prints in small formats presents geometric shapes with patterns radiating from the center of them. Her use of a limited palette and solid coloured shapes makes the prints appear minimalist and precise.
The composition of soft flowing shapes with imperfect edges contrast the almost hypnotic pattern of short sharp lines following the soft forms and filling the entire surfaces. The lines are carved in the linoleum plates and emerge through the negative space of the print, making the background become an active part in the image. By working with bold colours in pairs of two, the printed shapes contrast the linework making the white of the background stand out and almost vibrate in the compositions.
In her abstract work, Kycia is bringing out the pure enjoyment of playing with form and colour that can be experienced in the subtle but mesmerizingly vibrating compositions. The softness and asymmetry of the rounded shapes coming down from the top of the prints could also be seen as a symbolic reference and opens up for association to the female body. With patterns like heat radiating from within further associates the shapes to a warm body. The receptiveness of the minimalist images invites the viewer to read new perspectives into them or simply enjoy the visual experience.
