German artist Anja Höppner works with lithography and etching, depicting androgynous figures with clear lines against patterned backgrounds. The figures appear pensive, their gaze directed into the distance and away from the viewer.

In an often minimalist color palette, the protagonists are sometimes defined by extravagant objects reminiscent of fragments of marine life, which the figures wear as extravagant headgear. In other works, imaginary figures in the background underscore the reflective state of a dream world. The facial expressions are often calm and patient, lost in thought and passive toward the viewer. There is a certain dissonance and tension between the calm presence of the figures and their extravagant outfits or, in other works, their imaginary conversation partners.

The sometimes bizarre head coverings stimulate the imagination and encourage the viewer to reflect on their symbolic meaning. Both series of works share the contemplative character of the images and allow the viewer space to enjoy the state of calm and lose themselves in.
