Arsentij Pawlow (DE)
Text written by GHA
German artist Arsentij Pawlow’s large black and white lithographs are like glimpses of private, unguarded moments presented with a perceptible sensitivity. As he positions the viewer as a silent observer of the figurative scenarios, a multitude of narratives is slowly revealed.
The classical expression rendered using both charcoal and ink, makes the works accessible and simultaneously creates a suspense in the picture plane. The lines that define the figures have a chalk-like quality that gives them an appearance similar to a sketch, while a combination of energetic brushstrokes, lines, and splatter creates a balanced tension between the dynamic backgrounds and calm scenarios unfolding in the foreground.
His images, often depicting groups of young people interacting in leisurely moments, convey a sense of familiarity. The diverse splashes of black paint surrounding them create an almost noisy atmosphere that contrasts with the stillness and intimacy of the figures in focus.
This juxtaposition between calm interaction and restless backgrounds evokes the complexity of everyday life: how moments of quiet are always surrounded by movement and action. The combination of classic expression and contemporary backdrops results in images that appear both timeless and modern. These works, which show quietly observed and highlighted moments of everyday life, are a tribute to the mundane but beautiful normality of daily life.
