Polish artist Dawid Ławicki presents “Phantom” a colourful abstract woodcut that invites the viewer to step into the deep jungle-like landscape of an almost fantastical kind. With a layering of strong contrasting colours, the work generates a strong sense of spatial depth, while the familiar yet surreal blurs the lines between the real and the imagined.

A noticeable element is the visible traces of the wooden printing surface which brings a tactility to the image. The presence of the texture and grain of the woodblock in the print connects the creation process to the story of the image. The result is a grounding of the dreamlike motif presented as a place of exploration but also disorientation. The different shapes and forms suggest natural elements such as branches, leaves, and water while still appearing abstract, resisting a clear definition. This encourages the viewer to associate and go down a path of personal interpretation and imagination.

There is a playfulness present in Ławicki’s work that makes it almost hypnotic or psychedelic. In this way, the woodcut becomes a visual journey with the potential to transform into an inner journey. It is not just an image but an invitation to step in, to wander, and to explore a landscape that exists somewhere between imagination, memory, and the physical world.
