John Graham (CA)
Text written by GHA
In John Graham’s etchings, human figures and anthropomorphic animals coexist in images defined by fine lines. The peaceful atmosphere is reinforced by the calm interactions between the figures and their serene, thoughtful expressions.
The figures positioned in diverse perspectives against minimalist backgrounds underscore the dream-like quality. Using only a few soft colors and concise black lines, Graham creates contemplative images of fantasy worlds. Birds with human heads, human bodies with animal heads, and clowns with unrealistic proportions rest peacefully side by side. Some are reminiscent of circus characters, while others seem to offer each other comfort. Their presence and body language express tenderness and vulnerability, but also a certain reservedness as they turn toward each other, paying their full attention.
The atmosphere of loneliness is subtle, as the protagonists seem to find comfort and trust in each other. Through the tranquil presence of the figures, the works convey a peaceful empathy that encourages the viewer to reflect.
