Kristýna Kyslíková (CZ)
Text written by GHA
Kristýna Kyslíková’s monochrome linocuts capture intimate moments of self-observation. The figures are depicted standing alone in front of mirrors, contemplating their own reflections and engaging in silent dialogue with themselves.
The figures, dressed only in towels, appear to have just stepped out of the shower and paused for a moment while getting ready. The scene, reminiscent of a morning ritual, shows only fragments of the reflection and the figures in front of it. The expressive mood is supported by the subtle and nuanced choice of colors. The bold and vibrant color fields create a somber atmosphere whose three-dimensionality is intensified by the layers of shadows. The protagonists’ gazes are confrontational and serious, and their body language is passive and calm.
The viewer becomes an observer and participates in a quiet moment that seems very private and vulnerable. The scenario questions a presumed serenity with regard to the identity and body image of the individual.
