Ladan (IR)
Text written by GHA

Ladan is an Iranian artist who works with surreal linocuts in which fragmented figures float in dreamlike spaces. Using a limited palette of only two colors, she creates detailed images that appear peaceful at first glance but reveal an underlying disturbing atmosphere upon closer inspection.

The bodies, and especially the heads with their soft and anonymous facial features printed in dark colors, seem to glide through space. The floating hair flows in movements reminiscent of ocean currents, suggesting that the scenes could be taking place in water. The backgrounds, often black, suggest that light cannot reach the endless void. The contrasting, softer colors mainly support the flowing forms and movements of the scenes depicted, which seem to be in constant motion. With their eyes often closed and a passive posture, the figures appear motionless or asleep, or slowly merging with their surroundings.

The fragmented figures act as carriers of emotion in the images. They seem to be caught up in the constant movement of uncontrollable currents, conveying a sense of uncertainty and the emotional loneliness of being human.
