Laurence de Saint Martin (FR)
Text written by GHA
French artist Laurence de Saint Martin presents joyful snapshots of everyday life in her aquatints. A recurring theme in the black-and-white prints shows figures in playful situations with man’s best friend and companion—the dog. The images visualize dramatic landscapes with highly structured surfaces where all the protagonists are engaged in outdoor activities. The minimalist lines reduce details such as facial features, leaving the figures anonymous.
The people appear relaxed and carefree, digging in the earth with shovels in their hands and their attention focused on the ground. They are accompanied by dogs running around and playing with each other, conveying a feeling of ecstatic freedom. The story in these black-and-white works easily evokes associations with older private family photos.
The dramatic depiction of the landscapes in dark shades and expressive textures creates a slightly tense atmosphere that suggests a storm may be brewing. The lively depiction of joyful moments creates an energetic movement that fills the surface of the print and softens the drama of the image. The expressive use of contrast adds a dimension to the everyday scenario that emotionally expands the narrative of simple description and allows for further interpretation.
