Miloš Mozdík (SK)
Text written by GHA
With his black-and-white woodcuts, Slovakian artist Miloš Mozdík presents strikingly vivid portraits of older women, using a meticulous arrangement of small dots in a wave-like pattern. This delicate and precise technique defines the shape and contour of the subjects, adding depth and texture to the surface of the image. The result is a series of timeless portraits that offer small but impressive moments in the lives of their anonymous subjects.
Mozdík brings the viewer close to the subjects, dispensing with backgrounds but making the unmistakable signs of age clearly visible, with wrinkles that bear witness to experience and eyes that have a wise gleam. Their facial expressions are gentle, some even slightly cheerful, and radiate an undeniable presence. The seemingly traditional clothing hints at cultural roots, but the images remain unbound to a specific time or place, giving them a universal quality. The wave-like pattern that runs across the surface of the images reflects the natural rhythm of skin and fabric, filling the portraits with life.
The works pay homage to age, dignity, and lived life, which is reflected in the fine lines of their faces, and honor that beauty while inviting reflection.
