ORLANDO (DE)

ORLANDO (DE)
Text written by GHA

Under the name ORLANDO, the German artist explores themes of identity and transformation found in Virginia Woolf’s Orlando. In her black-and-white mezzotint, her ultra-contemporary practice is deeply influenced by the atmosphere and urban fabric of Warsaw, a city whose history and energy shape the sensibility of her visual language.

At the heart of her work is an exploration of the sky and stormy weather, with atmospheric phenomena depicted as captivating visual experiences. In the Cloudbusting series, dark, swirling clouds dominate the composition, expressed through dynamic contrasts of light and expressive gestural markings. The work conveys both tension and awe, capturing the fleeting, changing moods of the sky. By focusing on the elemental forces—wind, rain, and cloud formations—Orlando creates a metaphorical dialogue between natural phenomena and human emotions, memories, and perceptions.

Her practice moves in the space between abstraction and representation, inviting the viewer to experience both the literal intensity of a storm and its emotional resonance.
