ROBERT KELLY (IE)
Text/Translation GHA

Robert Kelly is inspired by abstract and poetic compositions. Through the colourful swirls in his lithographs, Kelly transmits movement and richness of colour, almost like in a joyful dance.

Robert Kelly is an Irish visual artist. His art focuses on printmaking, painting, drawing, photography and video. Kelly mostly originates his artworks from an evasive area, by him conceived as a non defined space because it is at the centre of experience, memory and imagination.

In Robert Kelly’s carborundum prints the observer is mesmerised by the vibrant colours behaving like words flowing on the prints.

Every hue seems to dance to each other as in a living balanced atmosphere. This translates into color juxtapositions in which the elements that resemble thick and impulsive brush strokes suddenly seem to become alive and start interacting with each other. These splashes of refreshing color reminisce of spring; the generation of life.

The artworks provide the viewer with insights into the mind of the artist, and the viewer is invited to peer into this mental game. The variations of his “Energy Within” can remind the viewer of planets. Lighter or darker hues are in contrast with the background as if they were air, seas and oceans in movement.

He asserts: “To me all art is ultimately about perception. I’m fascinated by the interconnectedness of things and through my work seek to explore space both visible and invisible. I like to think my work alludes to a type of visual poetry that emerges from a space where experience, memory and imagination collide through the interaction of materials and printmaking processes”.
