Sae Oshio (JP)
Text written by GHA
Japanese artist Sae Oshio creates whimsical woodblock prints in which she combines complex urban landscapes with floating objects, doodles, letters, and splashes of color. By using gampi paper, Oshio emphasizes the unique qualities of woodblock printing and explores how hand traces and multi-layered forms permeate both sides of the paper. Her prints transform into sketch-like, two-dimensional motifs in which texture, line, and color merge.
Her imaginary landscapes, composed of delicate lines and soft, atmospheric hues, evoke narratives that are constantly evolving, inviting viewers to explore spaces where memory and imagination merge. Each print captures fleeting moments and tactile experiences, reflecting how subtle interactions with objects imperceptibly seep into sensory memories and shape personal development and evolution.
Oshio’s work reflects the fleeting impressions of everyday life—gestures, words, evaporating scents—and assembles them into collages that trace the scattered emotions of encounters. Through these prints, she explores where we come from and where we are going, offering viewers a space to recognize and resonate with nostalgia, fleeting sensations, and the quiet accumulation of lived experiences
