Sonya Chelebieva’s large-scale aquatints depict urban cityscapes and rural environments, resembling snapshots of everyday life. The images are composed of multi-layered prints over softly coloured backgrounds appearing almost as collages.

By superimposing the displaced objects, figures, and architectural elements in black and white from different perspectives, she constructs scenes that are open to a wide variety of narratives.

In the background, soft colours are peaking through and subtle textures mimic the visual expression of the surrounding sites. Waves represent the ocean and striped surfaces mirror the strict architecture of the big city.  The surroundings suggest a life full of activity, with objects such as traffic lights and work tools alongside people at rest.
They are positioned sitting or laying down, enjoying the sunshine and having a break in their busy routines.

The brief interludes depicted in the prints draws a connection between the everyday lives in the city and the rural countryside, inviting the viewer to observe as it quietly unfolds. The calm presence of the figures and surroundings convey a peacefulness and serenity that the viewer can escape in.
