Wojciech Tylbor-Kubrakiewicz (PL)
Text written by GHA
Polish artist Wojciech Tylbor-Kubrakiewicz presents ‘Longing,’ a large-format linocut depicting a remote, ordinary building in a rural area. With minimal use of colour, the print is predominantly black and white.
The frontal view is fragmented by vertical lines, disrupting the apparent tranquillity. The building appears rather old and neglected, while human presence is minimal. A shadowy figure appears in the centre of the image, mysteriously interrupting the motif and giving the impression that different moments in time are superimposed in a single image. Although the figure is barely recognisable, its presence creates a tension between what one sees and what one perceives, creating an atmosphere that seems both distant and intimate.
The visual interruptions in the image reinforce the feeling of neglect, as the work documents the slow decay and reminds us of the people who once lived here. It is a silent decay: a testament to the passage of time and the traces left behind by people who were once part of the narrative.
Tylbor-Kubrakiewicz’s work explores the juxtaposition of time, place, space and memory by drawing attention to the undiscovered. Tylbor-Kubrakiewicz’s work explores the juxtaposition of time, place, space, and memory by drawing attention to the undiscovered. The absence of concrete, time-related objects opens up space for interpretation and questions the reliability of what is seen.
