YO ISEKI (JP)
Text/Translation GHA
Iseki creates abstract and colorful compositions that get the viewer’s attention instantly, achieving a peaceful and pleasant sense of joy. Born in Tokyo in 1964, Japanese artist Yo Iseki is currently living in Inzai City.
The pieces appear to come alive through a mixture of bright and vivid colours that are able to immediately catch the viewer’s attention. With his prints he gives a brand new life to wood. He draws randomly a line in the wooden block by means of a pencil or a brush and then he carves it. In order to achieve a multicoloured plate, the first colour now needs to be printed.
Hereafter, he is returning to his woodblock and cuts out further details. Then he can print the second colour and this process can be continued depending on how many colours Iseki plans to print. With his artworks, Yo Iseki recreates memories of an enchanted world that is typical for childhood, bringing joyful animal creatures in bright colours to life.
Variations of red and yellow come to the viewer’s eyes; purple and green, although plain, appear to meet the warmest colour hues. Like a bouquet, the colours in Iseki’s art often reveal all their beauty within a dark blue background and similare an explosion.
