The mixed-media drawings, seemingly inspired by city maps, show abstract geometric shapes supported by coloured surfaces and suggest labyrinthine, imaginary landscapes from a bird’s eye view. The lines and pattern structure guide the eye on this journey of discovery.

Lauma uses a hybrid technique of acrylic, marker and biros on paper to construct textured, densely coded visual fields. The colour palette is central to creating the atmosphere of these works. Earthy browns, deep blacks and blues are punctuated by moments of vivid contrast, creating a spatial rhythm in the compositions. From a distance, each composition looks like an aerial perspective, characterised by the superimposition of gridded streets and fragmented infrastructure.

A closer look at the works reveals an intricate combination of dots, lines and strokes that together evoke a sense of order. Her works on paper emphasise the contrast between transparency and opacity, chaos and symmetry. This tension is indicative of a wider engagement with urbanity as a metaphorical terrain and is characterised by human ambition, memory, loss and constant change. Cities are not static cartographies, but living systems that are inherently characterised by change.
