“In her mixed media works, German artist Stephanie Krumbholz creates abstract patterns and structured forms with clear geometric references. In the complex yet subtle backgrounds, Krumbholz uses pencil, oil and gouache, opening up a contemplative space for the viewer.”

At the forefront, the elaborate patterns are not precise or uniform, but are distinctive and appear effortless, almost playful. The abstractions are restrained and evoke an unexpected sense of order and serenity. Each circle or square is uniquely constructed and reflect possible rock formations or erosions. However, these natural forms are sometimes supported by grid-like patterns, especially in her smaller works. Rectilinear grids evoke numerous associations that are often man-made and urban, such as maps and floor plans. The viewer is invited to physically approach the work and engage with this imaginary space.

The repetitive elements encourage the viewer to sharpen their vision into the canvas, and to discover the complexities that lie behind. Krumbholz’ creative decisions and the physical processes behind the works are partially visible; supporting the structure of the background, layers of material and medium are superimposed over one another. Expressive effects are created with her materials, using pencil and pastel and the incised traces they leave behind. This elegance of layering and subtle minimalism allows the viewer’s gaze to linger on the work, creating rethinking new forms and contexts. By leaving past ideas within the piece, the artist provides the viewer with a calm space to explore and consider their own thoughts.
