Ezhkova’s portraits, painted with watercolour and tempera on fabric, often show protagonists of all ages against monochrome backgrounds. In a new series of works, she shows girls framed by a wreath of flowers.

The circular composition with soft brushstrokes and a muted colour palette enhances the feeling of nostalgia and is reminiscent of iconography. The use of a muted colour palette emphasises the prevailing tension between memory, stillness and vulnerability. The people depicted in the pictures possess a peculiar beauty that is difficult to resist. The people are not mere models, but appear familiar and credible, to be loved, mourned and remembered.

Ezhkovas’ narrative seems to be characterised by genuine affection, and yet an undertone of sadness pervades the story; only a few of her protagonists smile. This sadness could be interpreted as a longing for people and places that she can only revisit through the medium of painting. The theme of memory and nostalgia is one that many artists have explored. However, Ezhkova’s approach of staging familiar scenarios is remarkable because she succeeds in evoking a feeling of cosiness and at the same time creating a sense of trepidation.
