Ann Löwenstein (SE)
Swedish artist Ann Löwenstein uses different types of media and material for her drawings and prints. The artist finds inspiration in external impressions, such as ancient symbols, and subconscious thoughts.
Her protagonists are slim figures with clearly defined outlines. They are often portrayed with their face turned to the side or up, as if looking at something outside the work that the viewer cannot see. The characters are usually posed in a manner that makes them look like they all exist independently of each other, even if they share the same space. Everyone is caught up in their own thoughts, not interacting with one another, all gazing at something, but no one is looking in the same direction. This creates a feeling of solitude in the otherwise crowded works.

Some of the characters look like sketches of the human form, placed in similar stances and poses over and over. Löwenstein’s protagonists do not inhabit a realistic setting. They find themselves instead supported by light colored backgrounds, that are contrasting their often black clothes. The occasional pop of color, like some characters’ green skin tone or red clown nose, adds a playful touch to the otherwise calm and contemplative works. Most of her monotypes feature female characters, questioning their position in our current society.
