Barbora Heřmanová (CZ)
Text written by GHA
Heřmanová’s linocuts explore the concept of space through brightly coloured objects on a white background, accompanied by embossed structures.
The raised dots and lines, together with implied geometric shapes, lend the compositions a map-like quality. This combination of three- and two-dimensional elements on white paper enriches the spatial perception of these minimalist landscapes. Her multiples create depth through contrast and light, with the objects casting colourful shadows that suggest a carefully placed light source, further supported by the textured embossing. The tactile surfaces, which resemble abstracted vegetation, are central to the composition while the geometric shapes and their shadows evoke memories of houses in a flat field landscape.
These elements invite the viewer to engage with the artwork through both sight and texture, walking through an imaginary landscape. When viewing her work, the viewer is given a heightened awareness of spatial dynamics. The way in which these simple forms and textures can transform into evocative landscapes offers a playful interaction between the composition and the audience.
