Svend Bruun (DK)

In Danish modern visual artist Svend Bruun’s graphic works he uses the technique of photogravure, a technique developed in nineteenth century France. Containing mythological symbols and dreamlike conceptions the idiom of Bruun’s art pieces are both dark and wondrous.

Bruun’s surrealistic world can easily seduce the viewer. Circular shapes and four-footed animals are sharing the same scene; a skull is surrounded by wooden chairs that may fly. Black and brown hues make a darker atmosphere, however, the whole scenarios look engaging.

When observing Bruun’s engravings, the viewer is absorbed in a surreal and dreamy world. His largely monochromatic series of prints evoke a sense of melancholia and bewilderment. Nothing is clear and the setting is often rather absurd giving the viewer space to interpret freely.
