Evgenia Saré (FR)
Text written by GHA
Evgenia Saré’s black and white drypoint etchings in small formats show entertaining portraits of animals and people in humorous and delicate compositions that celebrate the whimsical and cheerful.
Using the drypoint technique, Saré’s energetic and light-hearted style unfolds in crisp lines, reminiscent of caricatures or mediaeval illustrations. In minimalist compositions, witty and somehow likeable characters play out small sketchy scenes in a cheerful atmosphere that allows the smiling viewer to continue to discover amusing details in the pictures. Bat-eyed animals and portraits of fuzzy-haired jokers and pranksters pose almost mischievously in the humorous prints. Dressed in medieval garb, with crooked fingers, long noses and drunken stares, the strange figures radiate joy and compassion as they come together in subtle interactions and pay homage to the whimsical and twisted.
It is as if the characters meet and merge in a constant hustle and bustle, hurriedly getting dressed without paying attention to whether their clothes fit or not. Despite the characters’ flaws and fatigues, the festivities seem to go on and celebrate life as such!
