Giovanni Tonello (IT)
Text written by GHA
Giovanni Tonello makes mixed-media prints in small formats using drypoint on CD’s and embossed paper to create mesmerising perspectives, alluding to the abstract experience of music.
By engraving symmetrical motifs, the Italian artist creates rhythmic patterns in vivid colours bearing a certain retro identity. As the texture of the paper actually pups up, the rich perspectives of the patterns drag the viewers’ eyes to convey an almost psychedelic experience of getting lost in geometrical vanishing points and depths. The CD is a largely extinct medium from the pre-digital age. When it is reused here as a matrix, the new expression is indirectly reminiscent of the aesthetics of the 1970s and supports nostalgic associations with the colours of stained glass from that era. The works thus serve as a time-portal while the abstract motifs at the same time mirror the mesmerising sensation of losing oneself to music.
As in the case of colours and geometrical patterns, the language of music takes place beyond words and leaves a multifaceted expression. Hence, the works may be seen as an homage to music’s unique language of rhythms and harmonies that transport listeners to another time and place. Immerse yourself in the colours and music of Tenollo’s portals and see where you end up!
