Mathias Winde (DE)
German artist Mathias Winde’s etchings expose vague and aerial figures leaving the viewer with a sensation of anxiety and loneliness.
The characters are always portrayed in groups but they do not interact, almost as if they were alienated from what’s happening on the outside. Winde’s interest lies in showing difficulties carried by common people who can only rely on themselves. Therefore, they all seem to lead a burdensome life of disadvantage.
The overall environment seems to be quiet but at the same time seemingly against the success of those characters. They are portrayed from behind: their faces are not visible to the viewer and, when they are, their features are not recognisable but rather blurred and indefinite.

The employment of the aquatint technique provides the work with a shaded tone, resulting in an ethereal atmosphere, suggesting a sense of oppression. Winde’s touch is quick but confident, resulting in highlighting the hidden traits of his characters.
