Michela Mascarucci (IT)
Text written by GHA
In Michela Mascarucci’s murky small-format etchings geometrical shapes merge to create complex, dynamic compositions, resembling retro-futuristic architecture.
The Italian artist uses the aquatint technique to create elegant contrasts and rich details in a significant texture reminiscent of fabric or canvas. A characteristic depth of perspective is achieved through the superimposition of layers, resulting in an almost hypnotic expression. Shades and shadows loom through the sepia filter of grey or faded turquoise to bring the motifs to life in an almost rhythmic choreography of contrasts and perspectives. The depiction of vibrating geometric shapes in abstract fantasy spaces brings associations to cubist compositions and since the forms emerge as architectural sketches, it is difficult to decide whether the depictions are future visions or glimpses of abandoned places and ideas from the past.
Similarly, the resemblance to the futuristic aesthetic of the 1930s conveys an idea of technological optimism and movement that is reminiscent of current advances, and so, the scenes invite us to reflect on how we got here and where we are going next. The intricate and multi-layered assemblages leave the profound works as open labyrinths, inviting questions and curiosity to enjoy and explore the exciting spaces.
