Tống Khánh Hà (VN)
Text written by GHA
“Tống Khánh Hà’s minimalist, monochromatic works explore spaces, their fragility and contemplative nature. Strategically placed splashes of color reveal an effortless yet intricate interplay of simple shapes against the bright background.”
The list of materials used makes it clear that the black marks and the linseed oil have been applied separately in a controlled and deliberate manner, allowing them to permeate in their own natural, undirected way. An essence of growth is palpable, as if the work is still spilling out and expanding. One could see these works as a series of process-based decisions, exploring the simplicity and texture of different mediums. Perhaps this represents the interplay of boundaries, reflecting on how the emotional, social and physical limits expand, change and merge into each other.
The balance of power may be questioned here, as if the acrylic spots believe they control the oil, while the oil flows on its own and conquers its paper terrain. The delicate nature of the paper lends itself well to being dampened by the medium. The titles of her series are often characterized by an open question, for instance “How does white feel?”. Here, too, the viewer is asked to undergo a self-examination. The proximity of the elements used and their interaction with each other provide a context for these enigmatic, minimalist and subtle images; a timeless contemplative space in which the viewer can return to themselves internally. In the search for a recognizable form, the mind is challenged and encouraged to perceive subliminal connections to natural forms such as sand and water, further enhancing the tranquil state.
