Allison Barry Rosenlund’s still lives combine a classical painting style with contemporary subjects. A still life is a work of art depicting inanimate subjects. The Flemish Masters, during the 14th and the 15th century, had a great production of remarcable still lives, particularly interesting for the representation of the smallest details.
Rosenlund’s oil paintings remind the still lives of the Flemish Masters, showing that the artist was probably inspired by their technique other than by their painting style.
The artist challenges the viewer, proposing him a quite familiar image both for the painting style and for the subjects depicted. Rosenlund brings the still life icon to the present day, depicting scenes of the current times.
Her still lives show computers and other electronic devices, cans of soda, snacks, images hinting to the internet era and in general uneasy scenarios which often contain explicit and distressing erotic and sexual references.The viewer becomes a voyeur, snooping into someone’s ordinary life and having the possibility to observe its most private moments. The presence of the viewer/voyeur is a key element, as it closes the narrative circle of Rosenlund’s paintings.
