CİHANGİR GÜMÜSTÜRKMEN (TR/DE)

The German-Turkish artist Cihangir Gümüstürkmen masters the creation of surrealistic images capable of both amazing and amusing the viewers. The physical laws are abolished in his paintings: people, animals and objects levitate freely above the ground, regardless of any gravity law. Thus, the most absurd combinations of contrasting elements are born.

In “A day in the gravelines”, for example, two men run confidently in the sky, followed by a white and elegant vintage car. In the foreground, two young men lead their donkeys in an empty and pacific residential area. In “Race”, the marathon runners are more numerous and compete on an empty beach near the sea. Indeed, the only public that they have is a parked classic car, and a closed wooden door floating in midair.

Cihangir Gümüstürkmen

Cihangir Gümüstürkmen begins the construction of his oneiric yet ironic visions from collages of photos from different epochs, which he then transposes on the canvas with oil painting. The skillfulness of his brush allows him to create very convincing pictures, characterized by bright colors and a pleasant atmosphere. The hyperrealism of the artworks astonishes the beholders, and challenges the absurdity of the compositions.
