Guy Langevin (CA)

Guy Langevin’s enthralling mezzotints in small formats show poetic close-ups of female bodies in fascinating compositions and saturated contrasts.
In these tender works, mesmerising universes of deep shadows and light unfold as the chiaro-scuro highlights sections of the female body. The compositions frame body-parts in almost voyeristic close-ups and carefully selected angles in detailed shapes and shadings that resemble handmade black and white photographs from times gone by.
As the viewers’ eyes grow accustomed to the darkness, swift lines and grey tones will slowly emerge to open up rich motifs in silky hues and velvet textures that leave tactile impressions of soft skin.
Curves and shapes, reminiscent of valleys and rivers at night or sunsets rising behind mountains, might even begin to appear, as bodies carve organic formations through the darkness to illuminate the void. Such associations call to mind great origin myths of Mother Nature, who brings life to the world, and the images can be seen as both a fascination and an exploration of the female body, untouchable, naked and yet mysterious. Viewers are invited to explore the interplay of light and darkness further on their own and to linger in these poetic and beautiful mezzotints in the borderline state between being and nothingness.
