Kamil Kocurek (PL)
In his provocative intaglio prints, Kamil Kocurek plays with perspective and questions the perception of war as a game.
Some of his works present a three dimensional impression through a rectangular shape superposed with military tools. This depiction and the artist‘s experimentation with proportions trick the eye, inviting the viewer to examine the piece more closely. Most of Kocurek‘s prints feature warcraft and military equipment, such as missiles, helicopters, or tanks. Through a monochromatic colour scheme, the white military weapons are highlighted on a darker background and vice versa. These elements’ style may remind the viewer of video games featuring soldiers at war. These types of video games are very popular in our era, banalising warfare and presenting war as an entertaining show.

Kocurek even places the weapons on imaginative platforms resembling game boards, creating an illusion of depth, but also highlighting how these dangerous tools are seen in a game-like way. He highlights how we are forgetting that war is not a game, but a real threat. Through his highly contrasted and somewhat surrealistic prints, Kocurek invites the audience to reflect on the issues, which our modern society faces.
