Victor Manuel Hernandez Castillo (MX)
Víctor M. H. Castillo’s large and mesmerizing linocuts confront the viewer with an overwhelming plot. His dense and figurative works can be perceived as aggressive, but enticing. Highly contrasted black and white pieces introduce the audience to the surreal images that feature disturbing fantastic creatures as well as people undergoing metamorphosis. There is a demonic element to the linocuts, that could be reminiscent of nightmares and fears.
Castillo creates very unsettling narratives, employing dense compositions without leaving any blank spaces. The overpowering plot offers the viewer multiple interpretations, going beyond the limits of human logic. The conceptual approach that the artist uses allows him to create a never-ending story, where one narrative gives a start to a new one, like a chain. This results in a bewitching effect and the desire in the viewer to zoom in on each bit of the artwork.
