Anna Shibanova (FR)
Text written by GHA
Anna Shibanova creates small-format etchings in black and white of bent houses and poses questions of home, belonging and change.
Using a classic aquatinte etching technique, the French artist brings beaten houses to life through the interplay of lines and shadows. This vortex of planks bristling in all directions creates a characteristic dynamism. In contrast, the background is left blank, leaving the houses floating out of context and firm surroundings. This isolates the buildings and almost turns them into concepts or abstract ideas – as if the homes themselves were suddenly homeless and are now taken apart to be examined from all angles, turned inside-out and upside down.
Hence, the houses touch on multiple contemporary issues that force us to reevaluate the concept of home. Topics such as globalization, war, famine and natural disasters all demonstrate that a home cannot be taken for granted as a stable thing, but should rather be seen as a precarious and ever-changing condition.Shibanova’s twisted depiction of home thereby contains numerous stories of exile, growing up and running away, inviting each viewer to reconsider what home means to them and how precarious it is.
