Karin Tiefensee (DE)
Text written by GHA
Karin Tiefensee’s abstract drypoints are an exploration of the relation between colours and shapes. Her layered patterns create an imaginary landscape, which is a result of the interaction between the outer and inner world. Therefore, the artist explores how our surroundings affect our thoughts and vice versa.
Tiefensee‘s drypoints overwhelm us with multiple interpretations. The titles of the artworks combine both abstract and straightforward ideas. Together, they express artistic creativity and allow us to embrace our freedom through the complex composition and ambitious use of various forms. Discrepancy between the images and the corresponding titles forces our imagination to work and come up with a meaning behind the abstract pieces.
Tiefensee employs drypoint – an intaglio technique, in which the artwork is created with the use of a needle-like tool, sometimes supported by carborundum. These tools enable the artist to add sharpness to her works and produce thin lines, creating a contrast with more voluminous abstract figures in pastel colors. By using black, Tiefensee changes the mood of the drypoints and creates a dynamic composition, portraying the inner landscape.
