Kristina Norvilaitė (LT)
Kristina Norvilaitė’s small format linocuts in bold colours show people and abstract objects in both disturbing and peaceful interactions.
In one series, the Lithuanian artist depicts human figures, often children, surrounded by abstract structures. As the subjects are isolated in pitch black spaces amidst undefinable objects and carry anxious, at times even desperate expressions, it is as if they incarnate mental states or emotions. The chaotic compositions and the strong contrasts of the superimposed colours black, red and white create a tense and dynamic formal language underlining the intensity and density of the depicted states.

In her newest series of works, a bold turquoise is added to the colour palette. The rich linocut texture is still intact, but the human characters have left. Instead the prints depict meetings of sealike structures in black spaces, perhaps resembling the ocean abyss. In juxtaposition with Norvilaitė’s earlier work, a quietness and tranquillity characterise these images. It is as if the pace has been slowed down and the objects now float in peaceful interactions beyond – or beneath – human understanding in tender conversations and interactions. Viewers will never know the exact content of these wordless conversations, but at least they get a chance to delve on the poetic compositions and appreciate how life unfolds all around us.
