Rita Vandevorst mezzotints are reminiscent of Victorian illustrations with gothic details. Her curious characters are placed in surreal surroundings inviting to be observed. The characters are usually children and ravens, coexisting in harmony or standing alone, constructing complex, but calm combinations.

Vandevorst creates frames as if they derive from a fairy tale. All the characters are in a contemplated state, usually with their gaze in the same direction, creating the feeling that they are heading somewhere united. The viewer can create their own story behind the characters, as they stand enigmatically. This atmosphere is enhanced by the use of black and white sceneries, where the sense of depth as well as mystery is increased.

The narrative behind the figures is creating a feeling of a mystic, parallel world, where ravens and children are taking action together, as one. Ravens often wear bird hoods, as a symbol of domestication and children wear Victorian glasses in the same aesthetic with the hoods, creating an uniformity, embracing the unity between the characters.

This deeply mystic world questions human and animal relations, when inviting the viewer to explore the power of this coexistence. The powerful interrelations of humans with other species is highlighted in these works.
